As Veterans Day approaches, the Diocese of Savannah honors our servicemen and women, and their families. Below are stories that showcase a few of our exceptional men and women serving our country, along with their families.

Conversation with Seminarian and Us Army Chaplain Candidate Nick Passero

Nick Passero speaks with us about why he feels becoming a US Army Chaplain "fits [him] like a glove." Nick Passero is a Seminarian and co-sponsor for both the Diocese of Savannah, and the Military Archdiocese, and considers himself "from the Army" due to his military upbringing.

Brownsville Pennsylvania, a small town about 30 miles south of Pittsburgh.

When did you join the army?

Erica Davis, reflected on her life as an "army wife" in an interview with the Southern Cross in advance of Veterans' Day, November 11.

What brought you to Savannah from Missouri? My husband Andrew is stationed at Hunter Army Airfield, as a Platoon Leader in Alpha Company of 1/75 Ranger Regiment. We have lived here 15 months.

How long have you been married? Almost two years. We have a son Tyson, who is 10 months old, and we are expecting a second baby on April 28, 2010.

Ministry of presence: Father Jim Sheil

  • Veteran's Day

"A great deal of ministry occurs in the parking lot or in the commissary; in the military we all wear the same clothes. There is an informal closeness," said Father Jim Sheil, Major, United States Army, currently a chaplain at Fort Stewart, Hinesville. "It is a ministry of presence."
