The Diocese of Savannah has partnered with Franciscan University’s Catechetical Institute Franciscan at Home to provide catechetical training for those who pass on the faith to our children. Together with the Catechetical Institute, our Diocese has custom-designed tracks for certification for Catechists, Catholic School Teachers, Parish Catechetical Leaders, and Principals. There are also additional enrichment tracks for parents, RCIA teams, pastoral care, and more.
Through the 2019-2020 year, Parish Catechetical Leaders and School Leadership are expected to register their parish, begin the formation process for themselves, and in collaboration with their pastor, create a plan for mentorship of catechists and teachers starting in the 2020-2021 year. A full guide of this process is available in our handbook below.
"Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another."
-Hebrews 10: 23-25
Why? As leaders in the field, we have a duty to help in the formation of those we lead.
The temptation in our digital age can be to replace formation only with distant experts, but when we do this, we lose something indispensable.
We know we cannot replace, with even the best videos, authentic ministerial relationships in the field. By offering workshops with a local guiding figure, we aim to encourage our parishes and schools toward mentored formation. This approach allows for person-to-person engagement over extended periods guided by tasks and assessments in the workshops.
In our first year, mentors will be provided for every Catechetical Leader in parishes and schools as they participate in the workshops themselves. Additionally, we encourage leadership to identify exceptional & knowledgeable catechists and teachers in their communities that could aid leadership in mentoring all the catechists and teachers in their communities. These potential mentors should begin taking workshops to familiarize themselves with the Catechetical Institute platform and plan to attend either an online or in-person mentor training.
