St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church is a vibrant Christian community of nearly 1,000 families. St. John serves a three-county area of 1,400 square miles. We are part of the Diocese of Savannah which serves most of Georgia except the Atlanta area. The original church on Ashley Street was built in 1927. In 1941 St. John Catholic School was founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph. The school was housed in an old hospital on Adair Street until 1959, when it moved to the current location on Gornto Road. The new convent was completed in 1960 and the new church was consecrated in 1968. A new parish center was built in 1992. The sanctuary was enlarged and several new school buildings were built in 2003. With renovations and new construction projects, our sanctuary now seats over 750 parishioners and our school supports over 200 students.
